Throughout Catholic Schools Week, DSHA students have been able to care for others in two ways: cutting their hair for great lengths and donating blood for the blood drive, both long-time traditions.
Great lengths took place on January 26th and was organized by the Caritas House under the leadership of Mrs. Metz. This year’s theme was “Love is in the Hair.” Studio 890, which has supported DSHA’s great lengths for over 20 years, returned once again to cut students’ hair. All donations support Children with Hairloss Organization’s to provide free wigs to children battling cancer.
This year, over 80 students donated their hair. Kaylie Ziarek, DSHA ‘28, who participated for the first time, shared, “Last year I saw everyone donate their hair, and that made me want to donate mine this year.” She hopes her donation helped inspire people to take a leap and impulse cut their hair.
Guest speaker Talia shared her personal cancer journey and explained how receiving a wig made the experience just a little easier, making the event especially meaningful. Her story inspired over 40 girls to impulse-cut their hair, making this year’s Great Lengths an especially impactful event.
Students also had the opportunity to donate blood on January 27th, and some participated in both events! The blood drive, organized by Illustrate house, was led by Mr. Montgomery and Mrs. Cotey. Versiti came to DSHA to draw the blood of students. If students were unable to donate blood or did not feel comfortable, they had the opportunity to sign up to volunteer at the event. All the blood donated is given to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, with each donation having the potential to save up to 3 lives.
This year, more than 100 students and staff members donated blood, including Anna Miller, DSHA ’26. Miller, who has donated blood twice before, said, “If I can save a life and I am healthy enough to do it, I am always willing to help.”
