Mason Thames. An 18 year old actor came to fame in his role as ‘Finny Blake’ in Blumhouse’s 2021 horror film, “The Black Phone.” Since then, his career has only gone up. However, will his newest feature in controversial author Colleen Hover’s newest page-to-screen adaptation, “Regretting You,” leave a mark on his reputation?
Mason has been acting since the age of 11 with his first role in the Apple TV series, “For All Mankind.” However, 13 year old Mason’s performance as Finny Blake alongside the infamous Ethan Hawke gained the attention of one individual, director Dean DeBlois. He was blown away with his talent and knew he was right for his new live action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon.”
Thames has had an amazing year for his career. Besides acting, he has also made a name for himself in the fashion industry. While he has not been officially announced as an ambassador for Louis Vuitton, he attended the 2025 Paris fashion week head to toe in Nicolas Ghesquière’s designs. Mason was also included in the WWD piece from Louis Vuitton, featuring Thames getting ready for the Spring 2026 Show.
Despite his recent success, his newest role as Miller Adams may leave fans and potential new directors from supporting and hiring him.
Colleen Hoover is a female American author with a huge following. Her success can’t be denied but her writing quality and subjects are surely challenged. Colleen’s most popular novel, “It Ends With Us,” sparked the most controversy after it was put on the big screen, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
However, even before that, fans and first time readers claimed that Hoover’s novel was romanticizing and glorifying toxic and abusive relationships. Many were concerned as her main readers are young, impressionable teenage girls. At the height of the book’s fame, Hoover decided to launch a coloring book based on the main character, a woman who has been facing domestic abuse. Critics rushed to the scene, calling this “an out of touch and inappropriate way to promote and sell merchandise.” The backlash was so severe that Colleen herself took to instagram, posting, “I hear you guys and I agree with you. No excuses. No finger-pointing. I have contacted the publisher to let them know I would prefer we don’t move forward with it. Thank you for the respectful discourse and accountability. Nothing but love.”
Since this dispute, Colleen’s career has still been on the up, and she continues to write and direct. However, with such a controversial director, will this new movie ruin Mason Thames opportunities or will it open new doors?
