Throughout March Madness there were many exciting games with multiple upsets, the most impressive being Arkansas (10) beating St. John’s (2) and McNeese State (12) upsetting Clemson (5).
This tournament left all 4 of the #1 ranked teams from their respective divisions in the Final Four. In these two semifinal games Houston had a historic comeback, beating Duke 70-67 taking the lead in the last 19 seconds, while Florida beat Auburn 79-73 in an equally fast-paced game.
To determine the March Madness champion a difficult match occurred between the #1 seeds of Florida and Houston. Florida was searching for their third title, while Houston was hoping to compete for their first ever national championship. Towards the start of the game both teams were playing very competitively, however, it seemed to be very noticeable that the Florida Gators were beginning to hit a decline when they missed six three-point shots in a row. Despite this upset, players like Will Richard brought points back onto the score board and began to push Florida back into the game. However, Houston was playing their best and was able to recover the lead when Mylik Wilson and Emanuel Sharp were on point with their shots creating an eight-point lead over the Gators. When halftime rolled around, Houston was still in a lead of 31-28 and they were playing a great defensive game. Houston continued this lead for quite a while players like LJ Cryer were able to put many three-point shots on the board. While Houston was in the lead, the Florida Gators were finally starting to catch up. After struggling during the game, Walter Clayton Jr. was finally able to score some points and find his groove. When Alijah Martin was fouled and was able to put some free throw shots up, Florida regained the lead after a lot of struggles.
In the end, Florida beat Houston 65-63, their third National championship since 2007.
