“Last summer, Chappell Roan was a camp counselor. This summer, she’s a pop star,” Tom Breihan writes in his review of pop artist Chappell Roan.
Chappell Roan’s ex may be waking up in the middle of the night and contemplating her marriage but fans can’t stop wondering how Chappell Roan became a global phenomenon or as Chappell would say ‘femininomenon’ overnight. Chappell Roan, with her campy pop songs, has been catching the attention of many young adults and teenagers. She’s quite literally becoming everyone’s new addiction from major pop artists like Sabrina Carpenter, to older artists like Elton John.
Despite the fact that she started to make music back in 2014 and even got a record deal with the well renowned Atlantic Records, she was not a household name until recently. Unlike musicians who hail from industry towns like Los Angeles or New York, Chappell Roan was raised in the small town of Willard, Missouri and because of where she’s from it was difficult for her to gain popularity.
Breihan writes, “She knows what it’s like to be a misfit small-town kid who can find escape through glitz and glamor, and she wants to reach those kids.”
Roan gained recognition back in September of 2023 when she released her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” – an album that navigates the trials and tribulations of growing up in a small town, along with the struggles of personal relationships.
The singer didn’t start growing in the industry until 2024 when she began performing as Olivia Rodrigo’s opener for the first leg of the GUTS World Tour. Olivia was one of the first big artists to come out and make everyone aware of Chappell’s talent.
“My Spotify Wrapped just came out. I think my number one artist was Chappell Roan. She just put out her first album, and Dan, my producer, produced it, and it’s amazing,” Rodrigo said in a twitter post back in December 2023, showing her support for the up and coming popstar.
As Roan began to perform at bigger venues and even headline for major festivals, she began to gain recognition from her peers. Her name and songs are being brought up in interviews, social media posts and even at other artists concerts.
Most recently, Roan was brought up by the singer Adele who talked about how addicting Chappell Roan is for her.
“She is spectacular, and it turns out, she’s not just got one song,” Adele expresses. “I think she’s absolutely amazing. I’m very excited for her, but my friend also said she’s a bit scared. So, do what you gotta do, baby girl, but you’re phenomenal,” she continues, showing her support for the rising musician.
Chappell Roan’s fanbase is extremely diverse and widespread, including older generations along with younger ones too. So many people love her and her music brings people together, creating a freeing space for people to express themselves.
With the use of her charismatic and bold persona, Chappell Roan has brought not only a safe space for many diverse communities but has also found a strong support system of artists that comes with the unexpected and quickly rising fame. With greater airplay and enhanced coverage, she might just become the favorite artist of this generation.
